8th East Kent (Buffs) were part of 17 Brigade, 24th Division which, in January 1916, moved to Ypres and the trenches of the salient there. The winter of 1915/1916 had been both cold and wet and the trenches were in a very poor condition which was not helped by the enemy artillery bombardment of them which destroyed parapets, blocked communication trenches and generally made life even more unbearable for the infantry. 21st January, 1916, was a particularly rough day for the battalion when 6 of their number were killed including George Stokes. |
